When can I preload GTA 6?
Rockstar has not yet published the preload date on its own Newswire. Multiple outlets report it as confirmed, but until it appears in an official Rockstar post, this page labels it reported. Source: Beebom, Screen Rant, Player. One · as of 2026-08-26
How big is the download?
Unknown. Rockstar has not published an install size official — every number you see today is an estimate. The figures circulating in credible reporting:
| Platform | Estimated size | Status |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 / Xbox Series X | 150–200 GB base install | rumor |
| Day-one patch | 30–50 GB on top | rumor |
| Xbox Series S | ~110–170 GB (smaller asset set) | rumor |
| PS5 Pro | No separate asset pack reported — "PS5 Pro Enhanced" tag only | reported |
Rockstar typically reveals storage requirements four to eight weeks before launch, which points to a September–October announcement. The exact number lands here the day it's official.

Storage prep checklist
Worst realistic case is base install plus day-one patch. Practical targets to clear before November 12:
- PS5 / PS5 Pro: free up ~250 GB. A stock PS5 has about 667 GB usable, so that's roughly a third of the drive. Move older games to USB storage (Settings → Storage) or delete and re-download later.
- Xbox Series X: free up ~250 GB of the ~802 GB usable. Use "Shrink games" where offered, or archive to an external drive.
- Xbox Series S: the tightest squeeze — even the smaller estimated install could eat over a third of the 364 GB usable. Plan for ~200 GB free, which likely means a Storage Expansion Card or a near-empty internal drive.
- Both platforms: the game must live on internal SSD or an official expansion drive — current-gen titles can be stored on external USB drives but not played from them.

Disc install notes: there is no disc
The "physical" edition of GTA 6 ships as a single-use download code in a box — no disc reported. Rockstar is widely reported to have confirmed this, and it means:
- Every copy, boxed or digital, is a full download from PSN or the Xbox network — there is no disc-based install to fall back on.
- Boxed buyers can reportedly redeem their code and preload from November 12 too, if retailers ship early reported.
- A code-in-box copy can't be resold, lent, or installed offline — if that matters to you, see the editions breakdown before choosing a version.
- A disc-quality internet connection matters: at 100 Mbps, a 200 GB download takes roughly 4.5 hours; at 25 Mbps, closer to 18. Preload exists precisely so you do this before launch night.

Unlock times
Not announced official. Rockstar has said nothing about launch-hour timing, and current reporting conflicts:
- Rolling midnight local: store countdowns point to the game unlocking at 12:00 AM in your own timezone on November 19 — which would mean New Zealand plays first, and US East Coast players start at midnight ET (9:00 PM PT on Nov 18 for the West Coast) rumor.
- Single global unlock: other reports describe one simultaneous worldwide moment instead, with staggered local clock times rumor.
Until Rockstar posts the schedule, don't plan your launch night around either version. Exact times will replace this section the moment they're official. Launch day itself is locked: see the release date page.
